World Menopause Day 2017- The Truth About Changing Hormones

Nov 02, 2017

A few weeks back, on 18th October, we celebrated World Menopause Day 2017, so as you’d expect, there were several programmes on the TV which attempted to explore more about this normal time in a woman’s life.

We heard stories about what it’s really like to experience hot flushes, vaginal dryness, anxiety, insomnia, depression, and everything else that popular culture tells us to expect from the menopause.

However, there was something that bothered me. I’ll be honest, it made me quite angry. Because all the media coverage talked about the menopause as if it was a traumatic, debilitating ‘condition’ or ‘illness’ that needed to be diagnosed and medicated.

The truth is actually very different.

Yes, the menopause can be a difficult time but it’s normal, natural and we can definitely take control and ease our symptoms, or even avoid them from happening in the first place.

For that reason, I decided to do a series of Facebook LIVE sessions for every day so I could help women know the truth about changing hormones, the peri-menopause and the menopause itself.

But I understand that you couldn’t all be there at the time, so I’ve put together this video post. This means you can glean the info when it suits you and start putting it into practice so you can enjoy the menopause, instead of fearing it.

Video 1: The Menopause- The Last Taboo?

In this first video I kick off the week by talking about the news programme on channel 5 which made me very angry. I’ll explain why I think the media was so unbalanced in their portrayal of the menopause, why medication isn’t the only answer and why we need to look at women’s health in a broader sense. Click the video to watch.

Video 2: How to Overcome Night Sweats

You might remember Jude’s story from channel 5 news. She was that poor lady to suffered with extreme hot sweats and even had to line her bed with plastic to avoid ruining the mattress. She believes that there’s nothing that can be done, but that’s not quite true. You can reduce or overcome your night sweats without needing to turn to HRT (and enjoy a better night’s sleep at the same time!) Click the video below to learn more.

Video 3: How to Avoid and Manage Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness is one of the menopausal symptoms that most women dread, yet no one wants to talk about. You might remember hearing about it In the channel 5 video when Jane opened up about her symptoms. She had severe vaginal dryness which affected her work, life and relationships and she was at her wit’s end. In this video I’ll be talking about why prevention is key in staying healthy and avoiding dryness, and I’ll also give you a few tips on how you can manage it. Click the video to watch.

Video 4: How to Keep Your Bones Strong During the Menopause

Have you ever seen inside my clinic? No? In this video you get a little sneak peak as I talk about why it’s so important to pay attention to your bone health, whatever your age and what you can do to protect them, whether you’re 35, 45, 55 or older. Click the video to watch.

Video 5: How to Reduce and Prevent Anxiety

PMT and anxiety can suddenly creep up on you until those last few days of your period are almost unbearable. Now, this is an early warning of how you might feel during the menopause so it gives you an opportunity to heal your body now, and feel better further on down the line. I’ll give you plenty of tips on how you can feel better, rebalance your hormones and enjoy a calmer period, peri-menopause or menopause. Click the video to watch.

Video 6: World Menopause Day 2017: Round Up of the Week

In this final video, we’ll be reviewing everything we’ve been talking about so far, including hot sweats, dryness, insomnia, anxiety, and bone health, and considering why prevention is always key when it comes to enjoying a stress-free menopause. Click the video to watch.
