The myths about being overweight

Flick through the pages of any popular woman's magazine and you'll common fat loss wisdom for yourself. “It's all your own fault for not controlling what you put into your mouth”, they tell you. “You're weak, you lack willpower and you're short on self-control” they say. “You just aren't doing it right; you need to try a low-fat/low-carb/low calorie diet.

You and I both know that's simply not true. If it was that easy, you'd have defeated your diet demons a long time ago. There's far more that goes into the equation that that.

Why are you overweight? (the real reasons)

So what's the truth? Why are you overweight? There are countless factors and influences that effect our relationship with food, from the emotional, to the psychological and to the physical. These run very deep, but with the help of hypnotherapy we can begin to unlock them.

EMOTIONS

From our moment of birth, we have learned to associate food with emotions. As a newborn, milk provided us with both physical and emotional nourishment as we bonded with our caregivers and began to explore the world. From there, society taught us to use food as a 'treat' or as a 'reward', when we were happy, sad or just bored. Whether we realise it or not, most of us have complicated relationships with food.

STRESS

Stress is huge role in modern life. From pursuing exams, chasing your dream career, running around after kids, caring for elderly relatives, dealing with grief, sadness, regret or loneliness; all of these things provide an enormous challenge for our bodies and we look to food to ease our emotional and psychological burden. This is for a couple of reasons.

On an emotional level, we often attempt to self-medicate with food when under stress. Levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine increase when we are stressed. This pushes the body into fight-or-flight As a result, the body tries to re-stabilise and looks to food and the nutrients it contains to help it do so.

Hormones are vital in the smooth running of our bodies. They include hormones associated with the menstrual cycle and childbirth, stress hormones, growth hormones and sleep hormones. A mis-balance with your hormones may be what is partly responsible for your struggles with your weight. Again stress, lifestyle challenges, physical illness and diet greatly influence them. Hypnotherapy can help you to diffuse and deal with that stress, balance your hormones, and smooth out your emotions.
