Menopause and Work: It’s Time to Talk

May 11, 2017

The response from the people of Nottingham when BBC Radio asked them the question, ‘What do you think of when we say 'the menopause'?’ did not surprise me at all. In fact, it was a reflection of the way we’ve heard it described many times in our Henpicked community and our social media….

‘Old’, ‘miserable’, ‘past it’, ‘painful’, ‘hot flushes’, ‘for older women’, ‘don’t know enough about it really’.

No wonder so many people don’t really want to talk about it. But what’s the point in burying your head in the sand about something that every single woman will go through at some point in her life, and that those around her will experience too?

That’s why the team and members of the Henpicked community decided it was time to do something about it. When we held a focus group with our authors to discuss what our hopes, fears and questions were, we got a...

Try these 6 Holistic Tips to Heal Your Brittle Nails

Apr 29, 2017

I have so many women of all ages coming to me asking what on earth they can do about their weak, brittle nails. They’ve been covering them in nail polish or extensions or keeping them hidden away as much as they can but they want more.

Feeling embarrassed, they tell me that they wish their nails looked normal again, but then admit that they feel ‘so vain’ for caring about such a seemingly insignificant thing as their nail health.

But I soon reassure them that they did the right thing by seeking help.

Because our nails are like a mirror. Whatever is happening deep within our bodies will be very apparent in our nail health.

So today I want to help YOU get to the bottom of why you’re suffering from brittle nails.

Together we’ll explore the connection between your nails and your health and investigate what might be causing those brittle nails.

Then we’ll turn our attention to the solution and I’ll share 6 tips that will help you heal your...

How to Avoid Postnatal Depression The 100% Natural Way

Apr 21, 2017

When you think about meeting your baby for the very first time, I bet you feel incredibly excited, a tiny bit overwhelmed and can’t help wondering what your child will be like.

Will he or she have your mother’s eyes, your father-in-laws smile, your partners curly hair? It’s an incredible time for the whole family.

And when you actually do meet that bundle of joy, it’s usually just as amazing, if not even better than you imagined!

But sadly, for around 15% of  new mothers, this isn’t at all what happens.

Postpartum depression strikes and ruins what should be an ecstatically happy time.

It steals your happiness, prevents you from bonding properly with your new baby, and in the most severe of cases, can actually prevent you from taking care of your baby properly.

But what many people don’t realise is that you can actually prevent postnatal depression, starting from right back in your pregnancy simply by taking great care of yourself.

What Happens When You Suffer from IBS and Go Through the Menopause?

Apr 01, 2017

Today, 1st April, kicks off International IBS Awareness Month. If you’re one of the unlucky 10-20% in the UK who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, you’ll be all too aware of just how much this uncomfortable condition can affect your life.

Those horrible symptoms such as stomach cramps, gassiness, pain, bloating, constipation and burping often prevent you from going out and enjoying your life in the way you deserve to. You can never truly relax when you know your tummy can start playing you up at any moment .

Not only does it hurt, it’s also very frustrating too. IBS is the mysterious ‘no idea’ syndrome- the one that’s diagnosed when your doctor has run out of ideas and has little suggestion as to what you’re supposed to do to feel better.

And then when the menopause comes knocking on your door, your problems can get even worse still. Still, your doctor has no helpful suggestions.

That’s why I’ve decided to come to your rescue...

Beating Constipation: How to Stay Regular During the Menopause

Mar 02, 2017

Constipation is a common problem for women of all ages, especially during the peri-menopause and menopause, and it’s also one I get asked about frequently during my clinics or #DEARPAMELA sessions on Facebook live.

The problem isn’t just our diets that are increasingly processed-food based, nor the stress of modern life, nor the fact we’re becoming increasingly sedentary as a nation.

It’s also thanks to the declining levels of oestrogen and progesterone in your body as you approach the menopause. This slows down your digestive system and leaves you feeling bunged up and unable to ‘go’ as regularly as you should.

There’s no way you can ever feel energetic, alive and positive about your life if your guts are backed up and refusing to let you ‘go’ as nature intended.

It’s horribly embarrassing, incredibly uncomfortable and also absolutely terrible when it come to your overall health.

So let me explain to you why it’s so...

Here’s Why You Should Love Your Hormonal Problems

Feb 17, 2017

Be honest with me- have you ever found yourself thinking ‘I HATE my hormones!! I wish they would just behave themselves and stop making my life a living hell!!’ or some variation of this idea?

If you’re peri-menopausal or even menopausal, you’ll probably curse the way they make you feel, hate feeling so completely at their mercy and dream of getting them under control and returning to your younger days when your hormones barely even bothered you.

You loathe your hot flushes, detest the way your stomach looks in the mirror, feel sick of feeling low and irritable all the time and just wish it would all go away.

I don’t blame you. I really don’t.

But I’m here today to explain why allowing yourself to feel like this could actually be worsening your symptoms and leaving you feeling pretty yuck. It’s not your fault, but with just a small change in mindset you can feel so much better.

Let me explain how.

Our unhappy relationship with our...

The REAL Truth about Clean Eating (It’s Not What You Think!)

Feb 03, 2017

Did you see the BBC Horizon documentary ‘The Truth About Clean Eating’ last Thursday? If not, you missed out on something that could change your life, but not for the reason that it was created.

You see, this biased documentary attempted to do what no one has ever done in the history of television before- criticise eating healthily! (As if eating more veggies and cutting out processed junk could ever be a bad thing…but I digress).

And honestly, their negativity towards clean eating made me angry.

Because most people aren't eating enough veggies as it is and popping 'clean eating' is sending the wrong message, suggesting that food doesn't have an impact negative or positive on our health and we know that’s not true.

So I’m here today to give you the functional nutrition side of the argument, and explain to you why clean eating isn’t all that bad, why fad diets spell bad news for our self-esteem and point you in the direction of a healthier...

Am I Suffering From Depression?

Jan 20, 2017

This week brought us #BlueMonday.

According to the media, it’s the most depressing day of the year when the skies are dark and grey, Christmas and NYs celebrations are all wrapped up, we’re feeling low on motivation and many of us are still to receive our first paycheck of the year….

And whilst it’s wonderful that coverage like this helps raise general awareness of mental health issues like depression, it does trivialise depression to a certain degree.

So whenever we feel stressed, overwhelmed or even a bit sad, we panic and ask ourselves.. 'Am I suffering from depression?'.

But this is not necessarily the case.

Today I’m here to show you that your low mood, sadness, lack of enthusiasm, low energy or tears aren’t a worry sign that you’re suffering from depression, but rather a sign that you need to address an imbalance in your life. I’ll also show you exactly how you can go about doing this. Let’s find out more.

Why you're not...
