If I was to ask you what you think most women find most difficult about the menopause, what would you say?

Would you tell me that hot flushes are a nightmare?

I’ll be honest. The contraceptive pill has been blessing for many women.

When it was introduced in the 60s, it accelerated the social revolution that was taking hold at the time. Women were suddenly empowered to choose their own path through life and break out of the shadow of men without worrying about unplanned pregnancies.

They could take control, they could choose when to have children, they could follow exciting career paths or further education instead of getting married young and taking care of the kids. Life wouldn’t be quite the same today if it wasn’t for the contraceptive pill.

However, there’s a darker side to the contraceptive pill and other forms of hormonal contraception that often doesn’t get discussed. It’s the damage that those tiny little pills can do to our long-term hormonal health and even our experience of the menopause.

Why Dieting Will Never Work During the Menopause

It seems so unfair doesn’t it?

The fact that when we start to get older, we also start gaining extra weight.

Not only do we have the menopause to wrap our heads around (and perhaps even several unwanted symptoms to work through), we also notice that our waistbands are getting tighter, our swimsuits don’t fit quite as well as they used to and we’re starting to put on weight that we didn’t have before.

I know that you’re a very pro-active woman, so you probably decided to do something about it and tried to slim back down to your pre-menopause size.

But that didn’t work either, did it?

Why You Should Definitely Ditch Conventional Tampons and Sanitary Towels

Most of us don’t give much thought to our sanitary protection, do we?

We just toss our choice of tampon or towel into our shopping trolley when it’s ‘that time of the month’, probably opting for the same brand that we’ve used for most of our lives and head straight to the till.

So it might surprise you to know that your choice of tampon or towel is something that you might want to seriously rethink.

Because increasing numbers of studies show that, far from being the convenient and clean option we think they are, these regular tampons and sanitary towels could actually be disrupting our hormones, damaging the environment and even increasing our risk of developing certain cancers.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’d heard these kinds of warnings for a long time but didn’t think I needed to change my shopping habits at all. After all, if they were that bad, they wouldn’t be right there in the supermarket, would they?

Have You Tackled this Vital Piece of the Menopause Puzzle?

When it comes to easing your menopausal symptoms, you’ve probably tried an awful lot of approaches in an attempt to feel even a little bit better and heal your hormones.

Why HRT Isn’t the Answer to the Menopause

There’s a woman I follow on Instagram who is taking HRT to deal with her menopausal symptoms. She’s proudly promoting it to anyone who will listen, saying that her breasts feel wonderful, her hair feels shiny and that she feels so sexy again.

The implication is that if you choose not to take HRT to ‘fix’ your menopausal symptoms, you can’t have any of the above. You can’t feel sexy, you can’t be happy and you’d be better off hiding away from the world.

As a passionate women’s health coach who believes in delivering balanced, science-based information, reading this post made me feel angry.

Because HRT really isn’t the answer to the menopause, and saying that you can’t feel sexy and wonderful without HRT is simply ridiculous and short-sighted.

Here's Why You Feel Depressed During the Menopausal Years

Did you catch the ‘Lorraine’ show on ITV a few days back where Carol Vorderman opened up about her struggles with depression during the menopause? (video is at the end of this post)

Describing her experience with depression as a ‘horrible, horrible thing’ and saying that it ‘totally floored’ her, she showed such bravery in her appearance and brought the menopausal depression issue out into the light. You can see how emotional it makes her feel to discuss it.

She did such an important thing by appearing on national TV like that. Because both the menopause and depression remain relatively taboo whilst continuing to destroy the lives of so many women’s life during this very vulnerable time.

Why My Healthy Diet Wasn’t Making Me Any Better..And What I Did Instead (Interview)
