You’ve Done Everything to Heal Your Sleep But Nothing is Working. What’s Next?

Aug 18, 2017

If I was to ask you what you think most women find most difficult about the menopause, what would you say?

Would you tell me that hot flushes are a nightmare?

Would you suggest that maybe it’s the fact that many women put on weight around the middle during these years?

Perhaps you’d even tell me that it’s the emotional side of things- the upheaval, the lack of confidence and the way the menopause often kills your self-esteem and your sense of self worth.

But in fact, it’s none of these things.

It’s the way that it seems completely impossible to get a good night’s sleep once you hit the menopause. You struggle to drop off, wake throughout the night and still feel tired and groggy the next day.

You’ve tried so hard to sleep better

And it’s not like you haven’t tried to do something about it. You’ve tried all of the usual tips like taking a hot bath before bed, enjoyed a warm drink, getting blackout blinds and even listening...

Did You Know that the Contraceptive Pill Could ‘Break’ Your Hormones?

Aug 03, 2017

I’ll be honest. The contraceptive pill has been blessing for many women.

When it was introduced in the 60s, it accelerated the social revolution that was taking hold at the time. Women were suddenly empowered to choose their own path through life and break out of the shadow of men without worrying about unplanned pregnancies.

They could take control, they could choose when to have children, they could follow exciting career paths or further education instead of getting married young and taking care of the kids. Life wouldn’t be quite the same today if it wasn’t for the contraceptive pill.

However, there’s a darker side to the contraceptive pill and other forms of hormonal contraception that often doesn’t get discussed. It’s the damage that those tiny little pills can do to our long-term hormonal health and even our experience of the menopause.

If you’re reading this now, you’re probably one of the 200 million women globally who have...

Why Dieting Will Never Work During the Menopause

Jul 18, 2017

It seems so unfair doesn’t it?

The fact that when we start to get older, we also start gaining extra weight.

Not only do we have the menopause to wrap our heads around (and perhaps even several unwanted symptoms to work through), we also notice that our waistbands are getting tighter, our swimsuits don’t fit quite as well as they used to and we’re starting to put on weight that we didn’t have before.

I know that you’re a very pro-active woman, so you probably decided to do something about it and tried to slim back down to your pre-menopause size.

But that didn’t work either, did it?

You gave up when you felt deprived on that strict diet, you just couldn’t tolerate the hunger pangs any more, and it seemed like no amount of swimming would ever make a difference.

And now you think you’re destined to be old, fat and frumpy forever.

Well, not necessarily.

Because whilst it is harder to lose weight during the menopausal years, you can fight...

Why You Should Definitely Ditch Conventional Tampons and Sanitary Towels

Jul 06, 2017

Most of us don’t give much thought to our sanitary protection, do we?

We just toss our choice of tampon or towel into our shopping trolley when it’s ‘that time of the month’, probably opting for the same brand that we’ve used for most of our lives and head straight to the till.

So it might surprise you to know that your choice of tampon or towel is something that you might want to seriously rethink.

Because increasing numbers of studies show that, far from being the convenient and clean option we think they are, these regular tampons and sanitary towels could actually be disrupting our hormones, damaging the environment and even increasing our risk of developing certain cancers.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’d heard these kinds of warnings for a long time but didn’t think I needed to change my shopping habits at all. After all, if they were that bad, they wouldn’t be right there in the supermarket, would they?

It was only...

Podcast Episode #1 (Interview): Understanding Your Hormones with Kathryn Peden

Jun 30, 2017

Have you ever wished you could understand what on earth is going on with your hormones?

Trying to work out why your sex drive is low, why you're lacking in energy and why you just don't feel like yourself?

Then don't miss this wonderful podcast interview I recently did with my friend and co-author of the Menopause book, Kathryn Peden, women's health and musculoskeletal physiotherapist.

She invited me to be a guest on her podcast so she could pick my brain about all things menopause! This was the reverse of what we're used to- usually it's ME interviewing HER!

(Check out this great video on posture that we recently did together)

Listen to the podcast to learn:

  • How your hormones flow throughout the month (and how this affects everything from your mood, your energy levels and even your sex drive!)
  • Why progesterone could be key in helping you feel great!
  • What your shortened cycle could mean for your hormonal balance
  • The three types of stress and how they affect your...

Have You Tackled this Vital Piece of the Menopause Puzzle?

Jun 23, 2017

When it comes to easing your menopausal symptoms, you’ve probably tried an awful lot of approaches in an attempt to feel even a little bit better and heal your hormones.

You might have ducked into the toilets at work and used cold wet flannel when those hot flashes hit. You might have tried taking certain supplements or herbs to see if they made any difference. You might have switched your eating habits in an attempt to lose those extra pounds on your tummy.

And whilst these things do often make a difference to how you’re feeling, they don’t always give you the answers you’re looking for.

Because, despite all of the time and expense you’ve invested, you still suffer with your horrible menopausal symptoms.

You still feel like your body is letting you down. You still worry that you’re getting old, losing your sex appeal and that you’re somehow ‘past it’.

But did you know that there’s another powerful approach you probably...

Why HRT Isn’t the Answer to the Menopause

Jun 08, 2017

There’s a woman I follow on Instagram who is taking HRT to deal with her menopausal symptoms. She’s proudly promoting it to anyone who will listen, saying that her breasts feel wonderful, her hair feels shiny and that she feels so sexy again.

The implication is that if you choose not to take HRT to ‘fix’ your menopausal symptoms, you can’t have any of the above. You can’t feel sexy, you can’t be happy and you’d be better off hiding away from the world.

As a passionate women’s health coach who believes in delivering balanced, science-based information, reading this post made me feel angry.

Because HRT really isn’t the answer to the menopause, and saying that you can’t feel sexy and wonderful without HRT is simply ridiculous and short-sighted.

Keep reading to find out why she got it all wrong about HRT, why you’d be better off staying away from it, why we need to shift our view of the menopause, and what you can...

Here's Why You Feel Depressed During the Menopausal Years

May 26, 2017

Did you catch the ‘Lorraine’ show on ITV a few days back where Carol Vorderman opened up about her struggles with depression during the menopause? (video is at the end of this post)

Describing her experience with depression as a ‘horrible, horrible thing’ and saying that it ‘totally floored’ her, she showed such bravery in her appearance and brought the menopausal depression issue out into the light. You can see how emotional it makes her feel to discuss it.

She did such an important thing by appearing on national TV like that. Because both the menopause and depression remain relatively taboo whilst continuing to destroy the lives of so many women’s life during this very vulnerable time.

You might be nodding your head at this point and quietly saying ‘Yes…that’s how I feel’.

So it’s important that you know that there is hope- you don’t have to sit back and let depression extinguish all light from your...

Why My Healthy Diet Wasn’t Making Me Any Better..And What I Did Instead (Interview)

May 12, 2017

Imagine that you’ve just been struck down with a horrible virus that leaves you bed-ridden for days, causes you to lose your voice, stops your brain working properly, and leaves totally exhausted and unable to spend quality time with your loved ones...

You’ve probably suffered with a virus like this (or similar) several times in your life.

And whilst it’s hardly a nice experience, you usually don’t feel overly worried. You’ll just get some rest, allow your immune system to work its magic and you’ll get back to it again.

But imagine now that this doesn’t happen.

Imagine if, six months later you STILL feel terrible. In fact, you feel WORSE. You still feel absolutely drained of energy and there seems like nothing you can do about it.

This is despite the fact you’re already eating a healthy diet, you’re exercising regularly and you’re taking great care of your mental and physical health.

So you make some extra tweaks, you...

Menopause and Work: It’s Time to Talk

May 11, 2017

The response from the people of Nottingham when BBC Radio asked them the question, ‘What do you think of when we say 'the menopause'?’ did not surprise me at all. In fact, it was a reflection of the way we’ve heard it described many times in our Henpicked community and our social media….

‘Old’, ‘miserable’, ‘past it’, ‘painful’, ‘hot flushes’, ‘for older women’, ‘don’t know enough about it really’.

No wonder so many people don’t really want to talk about it. But what’s the point in burying your head in the sand about something that every single woman will go through at some point in her life, and that those around her will experience too?

That’s why the team and members of the Henpicked community decided it was time to do something about it. When we held a focus group with our authors to discuss what our hopes, fears and questions were, we got a...
